Ondo Crisis Out of Control For Akeredolu Absence

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, a 67-year-old Nigerian politician, has been suffering from leukemia, a blood cancer caused by an increase in white blood cells. After a three-month medical leave in Germany, Akeredolu returned to Nigeria in September but has been confined to Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. He has faced pressure from opposition parties to resign or hand over power to his deputy, but has failed to do so.

Chemotherapy is a cancer treatment that uses powerful drugs or chemicals to kill fast-growing cells in the body. It can cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, hair loss, loss of appetite, fatigue, fever, mouth sores, pain, constipation, easy bruising, and bleeding.

Akeredolu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), won his re-election as the state governor in October 2020 and was sworn in for a second term in office in February 2021. President Bola Tinubu has summoned the Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, and the State House of Assembly Speaker, Olamide Oladiji, to Aso Villa in Abuja for an urgent meeting to resolve the leadership crisis in the state.

The emergency meeting is the second summoned by the President to resolve the leadership crisis in the state following the governor’s absence since July 2023. The call comes two weeks after Tinubu met with over 50 persons, including Aiyedatiwa, his and aides of Governor Akeredolu, state commissioners, party chieftains, and some elders of the state on November 24.
