Ongoing Investigations into the Burkina Faso Massacres

In early November, massacres in north-central Burkina Faso claimed the lives of at least 70 individuals, most of them being elderly and children.

The US and the European Union have demanded a probe, but the culprits are still at large. The European Union demanded that Ouagadougou authorities “shed full light” on the massacre, citing a potential death toll of approximately one hundred.

The US administration demanded an investigation and issued the harshest condemnation of the act. The prosecutor stated that it will be feasible to ascertain the precise number of deceased by speaking with the relatives of the injured and the victims.

After another massacre in Karma that claimed the lives of 136 people, including 21 children and 50 women, an inquiry was launched in April.

Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the transition’s president, urged against drawing “hasty conclusions” and urged against being held directly accountable for the killing.

Nothing formal has been released on the investigation’s findings since then.

Captain Traoré signed a one-year “general mobilisation” directive in April that permits young people 18 years of age and older to be requisitioned to battle terrorists, claiming to be making this war his top priority.
