President Embalo: No Coup Risk in Guinea-Bissau

Umaro Sissoco Embalo, the president of Guinea-Bissau, has selected Generals Tomas Djassi and Horta Inta as two new members of his security without linking his decision to recent coups in Africa.

The appointments take place against a backdrop of presidential security official-led coups in Niger and Gabon.

Prior to the new appointment, Djassi oversaw the national guard, which contributed to the failed coup in February 2022.

Inta was in charge of Bissau’s main police station, which was frequently commanded by soldiers.

Umaro Sissoco Embalo, the president of Guinea-Bissau, promised the press that there would be no coup in the nation, citing the failed coup attempt on February 1, 2022, which resulted in the deaths of 11 people.

Since gaining independence from Portugal in 1974, Guinea-Bissau has had a number of coups and attempted coups.
