President Ruto’s 1st Year: Success or Struggle?

William Ruto, the president of Kenya, was elected one year ago and has come under fire for how he has managed the nation’s economy.

Ruto has implemented new taxes and raised the price of necessities like food, fuel and power despite his promises to revitalise the stagnant economy and give more money to small business owners and undocumented workers. Many people have expressed their disenchantment with the government’s promises as a result of this.

The economy that Ruto’s administration took over was weighed down by debt, inflation, and a depreciating currency. The World Bank and IMF responded by extending loans in response to Ruto’s tax increases and reductions in gasoline and food subsidies. But the government’s initiatives have failed, and some have even had to be abandoned.

The government asserts that the actions taken over the past year were required to fix the disaster the former administration left behind, yet they have made things worse for Kenyans.

Ruto has built a reputation on the international scene as a defender of the environment and a crusader for the reform of international lending institutions as people struggle with the growing costs of food and other necessities.
