South Africa Beefs up Security ahead of BRICS Summit

The South African government declared that all of the preparations were complete, including observing close security measures for the major event.

Bheki Cele, the minister of police for South Africa, asserted that the nation’s security forces “are ready” and have been so for some time. He assures incoming leaders, delegates, and citizens that they will take whatever steps are necessary to ensure that the summit is held in a safe and secure environment and that nobody should be “scared.”

Although we have increased our capacities, he continued, “We have always been there, and we will be there long after BRICS.”

Due to its refusal to denounce Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, South Africa’s hosting of the summit has brought attention to its links to the Kremlin.

A total of 50 other world leaders, including Joko Widodo of Indonesia and Ebrahim Raisi of Iran, who are not members of the BRICS, have stated they will attend the meeting.

The BRICS countries make up around 25% of the world’s economy, and this year has seen a significant increase in interest in joining the organisation.

At least 40 nations have expressed interest in joining, and 23 have already submitted their applications.

South Africa is in favour of expanding BRICS membership.
