Supreme Court Denies Nnamdi Kanu’s Release, Approves Trial

The Nigerian Supreme Court ordered the trial court to proceed with the lawsuit.

The ruling of the Court of Appeal, which mandated the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been overturned by the Supreme Court.

The Appeal Court’s decision to drop Kanu’s accusations and revoke his terrorism-related charges was appealed by the Nigerian government in October of last year.

The Supreme Court ordered the trial court to proceed with the lawsuit.

Justice Emmanuel Agim gave the ruling, but Justice Garba Lawal wrote it.

Nonetheless, the Nigerian government was found to have unjustly and carelessly extradited Kanu from Kenya by the Supreme Court.

However, it also stated that no court would lose the authority to continue with the trial as a result of such an illegal act.

Since June 2021, the IPOB head has been detained.
