Tanzania’s Opposition Party Prepares for Protests

Tanzania’s opposition party, Chadema, is preparing for widespread protests to address concerns about proposed electoral bills, the high cost of living, and constitutional reform delays.

Police in Dar es Salaam have granted permission for the march, but have warned against violence and incitement.

The protests aim to pressure the government and urge swift reforms for the upcoming general election.

Chadema opposes three electoral bills presented in parliament last November, arguing that their views were not adequately considered.

These protests mark the first mass demonstration in Tanzania since President Samia Suluhu Hassan took power in March 2021.

The country, known for maintaining stability, is witnessing increased political activity in anticipation of these protests, with President Hassan adopting a reformist political stance since taking office.
