The Remarkable Achievement of Dr. Oluyinka Olutoye

Dr. Oluyinka Olurotimi Olutoye, an innovative Nigerian pediatric surgeon and Co-Director of the Texas Children’s Fetal Center, made history by executing the world’s first successful surgery on a fetus outside of the womb, subsequently returning it to the mother’s womb to flourish.
In an achievement reminiscent of a sci-fi narrative, Dr. Olutoye performed surgery on a 23-week-old fetus named Lyn Lee Boemer. The fetus had a dangerous tumour the size of a grapefruit. With the help of his team, Dr. Olutoye bravely excised 90% of the tumour during a tense five-hour operation, all while the foetus was outside the womb.
This trailblazing procedure represented a world-first. After the operation, Lyn Lee was meticulously returned to her mother’s womb, where she continued to grow. After three months of bed recovery, Margaret Boemer gave birth to Lyn Lee via caesarean section on June 6, 2016. Lyn Lee was born healthy, weighing 5 pounds and 5 ounces.
Lyn lee’s life was not only preserved by Dr. Olutoye’s adept hands but also ensured she flourished From being a “small little mucilaginous baby,” Lyn Lee transformed into an energetic toddler, laughing with her sisters. Now, Lyn Lee is 8 years old.
