Ugandan Government Faces Losses Due to Expired Vaccines

An audit study states that more than 5.6 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine, which the Ugandan government acquired with a loan from the World Bank, have expired.

These vaccines, which are valued at 28.1 billion Ugandan shillings ($7.3 million; £5.8 million), would be taken out of medical facilities and destroyed.

Furthermore, according to Uganda’s Auditor General John Muwanga’s report, $8.6 million worth of medications, mostly HIV antiretroviral medications (ARVs), have expired as a result of modifications to WHO treatment guidelines.

Chief of Uganda’s medicine procurement agency Moses Kamabare acknowledged that authorities expect the total losses from expired Covid vaccinations to surpass $78 million by year-end. One factor contributing to the problem is the decline in demand.
