Venita’s Comment: Benue State Assembly Calls for BBNaija Ban

Benue State House of Assembly has passed a resolution calling on the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to ban the popular reality TV show, Big Brother Naija.

The legislators voiced their disapproval of Venita Akpofure’s remarks towards the Tiv ethnic community during a recent plenary session. Section 34 of the 1999 Constitution, which ensures respect for a person’s or a group’s dignity, was referenced by Hon. Manger Manger, the lawmaker for Tarka State Constituency.

Akpofure’s statement on the show, which alleged Tiv people of Benue State offered their wives to visitors and friends for entertainment, caused a stir among the Tiv community and has the potential to stir up unrest and confusion if left unchecked.

In order to prevent similar incidents in the future, the House passed a resolution requesting that Akpofure publicly apologise to the Tiv ethnic community via two national newspapers and television stations. It also suggested that Akpofure be reported to the Inspector General of Police and that she be sued in a suitable court.

The House’s prompt action in addressing and condemning this issue is commendable and sends a strong message to ensure the preservation of peace and unity among different ethnic groups in the state. The resolution also serves as a reminder to media houses and production companies to be mindful of the content they broadcast and the impact it could have on viewers.
