Violence Escalates in South Sudan’s Pibor Region, 15 Dead

South Sudan has reported the deaths of 15 people, including the commissioner, in the Pibor region, following an escalation of violence. The incident occurred as the commissioner and his team returned from a village visit in Nyat village.

The perpetrators are suspected to be youths from the Anyuak community. The victims include Boma’s deputy army commander, government officials, and the commissioner’s bodyguards. Despite a peace deal in 2018, clashes persist among various armed groups, leading to civilian casualties and displacement.

The Greater Pibor Administrative Area remains particularly affected by such violence. The recurring conflicts highlight the persistent challenges South Sudan faces in achieving lasting peace and stability.
