Violent Attack in Buea, Cameroon

A violent attack on Buea, the capital of the South-West region of western Cameroon, has left at least one person dead. The attack, attributed to separatists, involved armed men attacking armed forces on patrol, targeting civilians, and burning cars.

The governor of the South-West region, Bernard Okalia, confirmed the death and reported several injuries.

Human Rights Watch estimated that at least 6,000 civilians had been killed by government forces and armed separatist fighters since late 2016 in the North-West and South-West regions.

The armed groups have been causing thousands to flee and displace themselves for seven years. Amnesty Internal reported that security forces, separatist rebels, and ethnic militiamen had committed “atrocities” in Cameroon’s North-West region.
