Nosiviwe was taken yesterday, April 4, 2024, to a Pretoria Magistrates Court, where she was released on 50,000 rand ($2,670) in bail. She was charged with 12 counts of corruption and one count of money laundering.

Mapisa-Nqakula maintained her innocence and claimed the charges were politically motivated due to the country’s upcoming national elections.

The allegations follow weeks of controversy over her receipt of 11 cash payments from a defence contractor during her tenure as minister of defence between 2016 and 2019.

She resigned as speaker of parliament and lawmaker after failing to block her arrest.

Her case has been postponed to June 4, with prosecutors planning to add another defendant.
