Five prominent African tribes were forcibly removed during the transatlantic slave trade, suffering tremendous hardship and displacement, with their descendants now dispersed throughout the Americas and beyond.
The Yoruba people, hailing from present-day Nigeria and the Republic of Benin, were relocated to nations like Brazil, Cuba, and Trinidad and Tobago. The Benin people also in present day Nigeria were also affected after the British destroyed the Benin Empire and the Oba went on exile, the Benin people became defenceless and were mostly carted away for trade.
The Igbo, also from Nigeria, were taken to Barbados, Haiti, and Jamaica before being further transported to North America.
The Akan people, primarily from modern-day Ghana, were sent to Brazil, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago.
The Congo people, originating from a region that includes today’s Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo (D.R.C.), and the Republic of Congo, were relocated to Brazil, Cuba, and Haiti.
Finally, the Mandinka people, coming from countries such as Senegal, Guinea, and Mali, were taken to Brazil and the United States.
These tribes experienced the brutal realities of the transatlantic slave trade, with their societies shattered and their cultural legacies dispersed across foreign lands.
