From Resource Dependency to Economic Sovereignty

BY Dr. Arikana Chihombori-Quao
Why is it that the most resource-rich continent on the planet, the backbone of global industries, is persistently cast as the poorest, Dr. Arikana Chihombori-Quao asked? Let’s be clear, she said: the world is dependent on Africa, not the other way around. With an abundance of natural resources, Africa has all it needs to thrive, and the global economy would crumble without our contributions.
Take, for example, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). If it ceased exporting coltan, a vital mineral for electronic devices, the ripple effect would disrupt economies worldwide. Yet, instead of focusing on unlocking this immense potential, many Africans are preoccupied with matters that do not drive progress.
It’s time to prioritize what truly matters—ending the exploitation of our wealth. France, for instance, allegedly siphons off $500 billion annually from Africa. Imagine the shift in global power if we collectively declared, “No more.” Africa is not the region that deserves the label of “developing”; perhaps nations like France should bear that title instead.
The time has come to reclaim our resources, assert our power, and redefine the narrative of Africa.
