The Roots of Michael King
When he was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia, the future civil rights icon was named after his father, the Reverend Michael King Sr. At the time, the elder King was a prominent figure in the community, serving as the senior pastor of the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church.
The name “Michael” was a source of pride for the family, but a transformative journey across the Atlantic in the mid-1930s would soon change their family lineage forever.
A Pilgrimage of Faith
In 1934, the Baptist World Alliance held a significant international meeting in Berlin, Germany. Ebenezer Baptist Church sent Reverend King Sr. as their representative. This was no ordinary business trip; it was a sprawling pilgrimage that took the elder King through Rome, Tunisia, Egypt, and the Holy Lands of Jerusalem and Bethlehem.
However, it was the final leg of the journey in Germany that left the deepest impression. While touring the country, Reverend King immersed himself in the history of Martin Luther, the 16th-century monk who famously challenged the Catholic Church and ignited the Protestant Reformation.
A Transformation in Honor of Reform
The elder King was deeply moved by the courage of the German reformer who had stood against the status quo to demand spiritual and social change. He saw a spiritual kinship between the struggles for justice in the Reformation and the challenges facing his own community in America.
Upon returning to Atlanta, the senior King took the bold step of changing his name to Martin Luther King Sr. and, simultaneously, changed his young son’s name to Martin Luther King Jr. This was more than just a name change; it was a symbolic passing of a torch, aligning his son’s future with a legacy of reform and moral courage.

This shift in identity proved prophetic.
