Is Julius Malema Firearm Offence The End?
Is Julius Malema Firearm Offence The End?
The President of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has been sentenced to five years in prison following a highโprofile firearm case linked to a 2018 political rally. The ruling was delivered on Thursday at the East London Regional Court in KuGompo City, marking one of the most consequential legal outcomes for a major South African opposition figure in recent years.
The cause of the Sentence The sentence stems from an incident during the EFFโs fifthโanniversary celebrations in Mdantsane in 2018, where Malema was seen to have triggered a semiโautomatic rifle into the air. Prosecutors argued that he unlawfully possessed the firearm and discharged it in a public space, violating multiple firearmโcontrol laws.
A major concern on this ruling is that the ruling carries significant political implications. If upheld, the sentence could disqualify Malema from serving in Parliament, posing a major setback for the EFF, which has positioned itself as a radical alternative in South African politics.
Just to be clear, JM should have known better as a leader than to give the enemy any excuse to persecute him under the guise of prosecuting him on the basis of the law.
Julius Malema is, no doubt, a beacon of hope for ordinary South Africans. Malema stands as the only genuine alternative, in line with the primary objective that birthed even the ANC of blessed memory. He was a student of the great Winnie Mandela, a woman who stood true to the cause to the very end.
Malema left the ANC to start his own political party, the EFF. This party has been growing strongly, with millions of supporters across South African provinces; hence, it has been deemed a threat.
Now that Malema has been sentenced to five yearsโ imprisonment, why five years? Five years from now will be 2031; the next South African presidential election is in 2029.
I hope Malemaโs next appeal at the High Court will be granted. South AfricansโAfricansโneed Julius Malema.
