Chad Election Update: President Deby Expected to Win Amid Opposition Concerns
Chad is preparing for elections on 21 May, with incumbent President General Mahamat Idriss Deby expected to secure an easy victory. Deby, who took power three years ago following his father’s passing, had initially pledged to hold elections within 18 months.
However, the government delayed the election and permitted Deby to run for president. While the election is anticipated to restore constitutional order in the country, opposition factions fear it will be manipulated.
Deby enjoys the support of the ruling Patriotic Salvation Movement (MPS) party. Success Masra, a prominent contender, has campaigned at the grassroots level, promising improved access to electricity, water, and security for all.
Despite his promises, Masra has faced criticism for joining the interim government as prime minister. Former Prime Minister Albert Pahimi Padacke, previously aligned with Deby’s father, is also a significant competitor.
Chad is leading the way for a series of elections in the region, prompting some opposition and civil society groups to escalate their efforts for a complete boycott of the upcoming poll.
