Chad’s PM Resigns Amid Disputed Election, Deby Confirmed Winner

Chad’s Prime Minister and opposition leader Succes Masra has resigned after interim President Mahamat Idriss Deby was confirmed as the winner of the May 6 presidential election.

Masra, a strong critic of the junta, was chosen in January to represent the opposition. In March, he was approved to run in the presidential election, aiming to restore constitutional order.

Although Masra alleged electoral fraud and declared himself the winner, the election body confirmed Deby’s victory with 61% of the vote. Masra accepted the decision and noted there were no other legal options to challenge the outcome.

Deby’s win continues the dynasty’s rule that began when Deby’s father seized power in a coup in the early 1990s.
