Cross River Assembly Impeaches Speaker Ayambem Over Alleged Fund Misuse

The Cross River State House of Assembly impeached Speaker Elvert Ekom Ayambem over allegations of fund misappropriation.

The impeachment resulted from a motion by Effiom Ekarika, representing Calabar South 1 Constituency, and Hon. Omang Charles Omang, representing Bekwarra State Constituency.

Ayambem, elected Speaker in June 2023, hails from Ikom 2 State Constituency. The last Assembly crisis happened in 2022 when 20 members switched from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed the 20 defecting members in 2022. It ruled that legislators couldn’t pass their mandates to a new party after leaving their original sponsor.
