Governor endorses reinstatement of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II as Emir of Kano

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has officially endorsed the reinstatement of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano, four years post his removal by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

Sanusi returned to Kano on Thursday with minimal fanfare and is scheduled to lead Jumu’at prayers at the Kano Central Mosque. The governor approved a bill that abolished four emirates established alongside the Emir of Kano, done under a contentious law in 2019 during the reign of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

The governor gave a 48-hour ultimatum to all deposed Emirs to clear out of their palaces. Nonetheless, a Federal High Court in Kano State has forbidden the Kano State Government from implementing the Kano State Emirate Council Repeal Law.

Justice Mohammed Liman granted the injunction in an Exparte application in Suit No FHC/KN/CS/182/2024 filed by Alhaji Aminu Babba Dan Agundi, the Sarkin Dawaki Babba of the Kano Emirate, against the Kano State Government, Kano State House of Assembly, Speaker, Attorney General of Kano State, Commissioner of Police, Inspector General of Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Department of State Services (DSS) as the 1st – 8th defendants.
