​Kenner’s most groundbreaking contribution was the sanitary belt equipped with a moisture-proof pocket. Before modern adhesive pads existed, managing menstruation was uncomfortable and unreliable for women. Her design offered unprecedented cleanliness, security, and personal dignity. When she patented the design in 1957, it marked a monumental leap forward in feminine hygiene.
​Her creative mind did not stop there. Kenner went on to earn five United States patents during her lifetime. She invented an adjustable tray attachment for walkers, giving individuals with mobility challenges a safe way to transport personal items. Recognizing the struggles of elderly and disabled individuals in the shower, she created a wall-mounted back washer. She also patented a specialized bathroom tissue holder that made dispensing paper effortless. Each design addressed a genuine human need with practical elegance.
​Overcoming Prejudice and Securing Her Legacy
​Despite her extraordinary talent, racial discrimination continually blocked her path to commercial success. In one notorious instance, a manufacturing company expressed strong interest in marketing her sanitary belt design. However, when company executives met Kenner in person and discovered she was a Black woman, they abruptly cancelled the agreement. This blatant racism deprived her of massive financial gains and delayed widespread access to her life-changing product.
​Kenner never received the fortune or widespread acclaim she earned through her brilliance. Nevertheless, her resilience never wavered. Today, history is finally giving Mary Beatrice Kenner her due honor. She remains a giant among American inventors, proving that quiet persistence and practical innovation can forever improve human lives.
