Kano State in Nigeria Enforces Ban on Protests Amid Royal Power Struggle

The governor of Nigeria’s northern state has issued a ban on protests and public rallies in order to prevent a power struggle between two rival royals over a traditional throne.

The dispute between former emir Muhammadu Sanusi II and Aminu Ado Bayero, who were ousted by Kano assembly lawmakers following changes to the 2019 emirate law, has heightened tensions among their respective supporters and political allies.

The governor cites credible intelligence indicating that opposition figures intend to fund “political agitators” to foment disorder in support of the deposed emir Bayero. Explicitly prohibiting protests, demonstrations, and processions of any nature, the state government warns of swift arrest for individuals engaged in such activities on Kano’s streets.

Kano police are on high alert to address any security threats, enforcing a policy of zero tolerance towards instability in the region. Both rival royals enjoy political backing, with Sanusi establishing residence in the emir’s palace for daily court proceedings, while Bayero resides in a royal guest house.
