Kenyan President Delays School Reopening Amid Deadly Floods and Cyclone Threat

Kenyan President William Ruto has delayed the scheduled reopening of schools due to heavy rains and floods that have resulted in the deaths of more than 200 individuals.

The president mentioned the potential threat of Cyclone Hidaya striking coastal Kenya in the upcoming days. Approximately 150,000 displaced individuals are currently residing in camps throughout Kenya and East Africa. The Ministry of Education has postponed the reopening of schools, leaving students awaiting new dates.

The government has instructed individuals living near 178 dams and reservoirs to evacuate or face mandatory relocation. Water levels at two major hydroelectric dams have reached record levels, and the government has faced criticism for its insufficient response to the floods. The flooding has claimed the lives of over 155 individuals in Tanzania, Burundi, Ethiopia, and Somalia.
