Nigerian Court Grants Bail of N5 Million to Tomato Paste Reviewer Chioma Okoli
In Abuja, a Federal High Court has granted Chioma Okoli bail in the sum of N5 million with two sureties. Okoli, who was arraigned on May 28, 2024, and subsequently remanded at Suleja Correctional Center, pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy and cyberstalking.
Justice Lifu, in granting bail, stipulated that she must have two sureties, one of whom must be her spouse or blood relative residing in Abuja with a verified means of livelihood. Additionally, Okoli is required to deposit her passport with the court. The court’s decision was based on Section 365 (5) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, emphasizing the presumption of innocence. The trial has been set for June 13, 2024.
Eric Omeofia, the CEO of Erisco Foods Limited, alleged that a negative product review by Okoli had a detrimental impact on his business. Okoli had criticized the Nagiko Tomato Mix for its high sugar content.
Okoli’s arrest in September 2023, along with her lawyer, raised concerns about potential violations of her fundamental rights by the police and Omeofia. The charges against her include conspiring to spread false information on social media and inciting the public against Erisco Foods Limited, despite knowing the information to be false.
