Protesters Rally in Tunisia, Urging a Clear Schedule for Presidential Elections
Hundreds of demonstrators in Tunisia are calling for the liberation of detained journalists, activists, and opposition figures, along with a set date for fair presidential elections.
The demonstration occurs amidst an economic and political turmoil and a series of arrests targeting journalists, attorneys, activists, and dissenters. Tunisian authorities raided the Lawyers Syndicate headquarters and apprehended Sonia Dahmani, a lawyer recognized for her critiques of President Kais Saied.
With the conclusion of the president’s initial term approaching, the Election Commission has yet to declare an election date. Saied assumed office in 2019, but later acquired more authority and took control of the judiciary, a move labeled as a coup by the opposition.
The opposition is demanding a transparent political environment for the elections, which includes lifting restrictions on the press and political liberties. Abir Moussa, a prominent candidate, has been incarcerated for several months, while Mondher Zanaidi has declared his intention to run for a potential election from France.
