Senegal Marks 64th Independence Day with New President and National Unity Theme
Senegal celebrated its 64th anniversary of independence from France on April 4th. The newly inaugurated President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, attended the ceremony in Dakar.
The celebrations were reduced to a flag-raising ceremony due to uncertainty ahead of the March 24th presidential poll. Faye conducted a troop review and greeted the heads of the country’s institutions.
Also, the event was under the theme “Armed forces at the heart of national cohesion.” Faye’s mentor, Ousmane Sonko, was named Prime Minister on April 2nd.
The president ran on a platform of sovereignty and a change from years of rule by Senegal’s political class.
