Sudanese City Gripped by Deadly Conflict: Over 100 Killed in Two Weeks of Fighting

Over a span of two weeks, the clash between Sudan’s military and a paramilitary group in Darfur’s west has resulted in the deaths of a minimum of 123 individuals and injuries to over 930 people, as reported by an international aid organization.

The strife initiated in April the previous year when tensions between the military and the Rapid Support Forces escalated into open confrontation in Khartoum, the capital. El-Fasher, the principal city of North Darfur province, has now turned into the focal point of the conflict between the military and the RSF, with support from Arab militias recognized as janjaweed.

This conflict has given rise to extensive sexual violence and atrocities, deemed as war crimes and crimes against humanity by humanitarian groups.

The UN’s food agency has cautioned the conflicting sides about the grave peril of widespread famine and fatalities if access for humanitarian aid is obstructed from reaching the area.

The RSF has laid siege to the city and conducted a significant assault on its southern and eastern sectors. Tragically, a shell struck the dwelling of an aid worker from Doctors Without Borders in el-Fasher, resulting in her demise.
