Sudan’s Conflict: Ramadan Ceasefire Conditions and Humanitarian Crisis

General Yasser al-Atta has declared that no ceasefire will be allowed during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan unless certain conditions are met. This reflects the ongoing conflict between Sudan’s armed forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which began in mid-April 2023 due to disagreements over Sudan’s transition to civilian rule.

The RSF must withdraw from civilian and public spaces, a condition based on a commitment made during mediated talks in Jeddah last May. The conflict has left significant damage, displacement, and infrastructure damage.

However, the road to peace remains challenging due to the RSF’s uncertain response and power struggles. The humanitarian crisis in Sudan is also a pressing issue. International actors, including the United Nations and the United States, have condemned the violence and urged peace and humanitarian assistance.
