Togo’s Electoral Revolution: Women Take Center Stage in 2024 Elections

Togo is gearing up for the legislative and regional elections on April 29, 2024, with a notable presence of women in the electoral race. There are 2,348 validated candidacies for the legislative elections and 113 seats available, with 593 women vying for parliament and 438 for the regional elections. Notable figures like current Prime Minister Victoire Dogbé are striving to introduce a fresh perspective and ensure a more balanced representation in the political sphere.

Rival Brigitte Adjamagbo-Johnson, a seasoned political figure with over thirty years of experience, embodies determination and resilience. She urges the Togolese people to support female candidates, shedding light on the obstacles they encounter, including physical risks. In contrast, Mimi Bossou-Soedjédé emphasizes close engagement with citizens and advocates for gender equality in the upcoming Togolese parliament.

Presently, Togo has 17 female parliamentarians among 91 deputies, constituting only 13.23% of municipal councilors and 12 female mayors out of 117 communes. The winds of change propelling numerous female candidates mirror the transformative aspirations within the female candidate pool.
