Zimbabwe’s Mnangagwa Denies Third Term Allegations Amid Constitution Debate
Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has denied allegations of running for an unconstitutional third term in a video released by The Sunday Mail.
He stated that there is no evidence of any violation of the Constitution by Zanu PF or the ruling party, which has reigned over Zimbabwe since independence. The party secured a supermajority in Parliament last February, allowing it to change the constitution if it wishes.
Zimbabwe’s 2013 Constitution limits the presidential term to two five-year mandates and establishes a constitutional court. Mnangagwa became head of state after a war of succession against Grace Mugabe, the wife of former president Robert Mugabe, who was dismissed in 2017.
