Chadian leader Mahamat Deby Itno votes in elections marking the end of military rule
Chad’s interim President, Mahat Idriss Deby Itno, has participated in a presidential election to conclude three years of military control.
Ten candidates, including Prime Minister Succès Masra, are competing, with 8 million registered voters. Deby Itno promised to facilitate elections as a step back to constitutional governance.
His father, a previous president and army official, was assassinated in 2021. Demonstrations broke out last year following the government’s declaration of extending Deby Itno’s tenure.
Deby Itno’s participation in the election has sparked both hope and skepticism among the Chadian population. Many are eager to see a return to civilian rule and democratic governance, while others remain wary of the military’s influence in the political process. The outcome of the election will undoubtedly have far-reaching implications for the future of Chad and its people.
