Meet Daniel Chapo: Frelimo’s New Leader and Mozambique’s Future President?

Mozambique’s ruling party, the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo), has named Daniel Chapo as its new leader.

President Filipe Nyusi dispelled rumors that Chapo would seek a third term, despite the constitution restricting a president to two 5-year terms.

Chapo is set to be the party’s presidential candidate in the upcoming October elections.

Frelimo has held power since Mozambique’s independence from Portugal in 1975 and is counting on Chapo to help prolong its governance. Chapo, a law graduate and former radio announcer, was appointed as a provincial governor in 2016.
