Federal High Court Denies Nnamdi Kanu’s Bail Amid Health Concerns

The Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed the application of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to be released on bail pending the determination of the Nigerian government’s preferred charge against him.

Kanu’s lawyers, led by Aloy Ejimakor, argued that Kanu’s deteriorating health, including hypertension and acute heart disease, posed a threat to his life and that the delay in prosecution was the government’s fault.

Ejimakor also argued that Kanu’s jump bail was academic due to various court findings. Meanwhile, FG’s lawyer, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, opposed the bail application, arguing that there was no guarantee that Kanu would make himself available for trial once released from detention.

The prosecution counsel argued that Section 161 of the 1999 Constitution stipulated that the defendant must prove that authorities failed to grant him access to quality healthcare at his detention center.
