Nigeria Takes Bold Step Towards Curbing Plastic Pollution

Nigeria, one of the world’s major plastic polluters, has prohibited single-use plastics such as straws, cutlery, plastic bottles, and water sachets. The nationwide ban is set to take effect in January next year, with the goal of reducing the country’s reliance on plastics.

It aims to combat the global plastic crisis, with over 70% of plastic waste currently ending up in the sea or landfills.

The ban will be enforced across all government ministries, departments, and agencies, with the environment ministry highlighting the importance of setting a good example.

Despite facing criticism due to heavy reliance on plastics, the Nigerian government is also working on a new policy to address the issue.
