NLC President Joe Ajaero Leaves Twitter Space Amid Backlash, Nationwide Protest Looms”

Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) president Joe Ajaero has left a Twitter Space conversation organised by SaharaReporters amid backlash from Nigerians who claim the NLC has failed under his leadership.

Ajaero had appeared on the SaharaReporters programme, “Economic Hardship: Ajaero to discuss living wage, the NLC and what next,” and was criticized for his handling of the backlash. The NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have declared a two-day nationwide mass protest on February 27 and 28 over economic hardship in the country.

At a meeting between labour leaders and officials of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, the labour leaders argued that only the government could stop the planned strike by addressing the 15-point agreement reached on October 2, 2023. The leaders argued that the responsibility lies with the government and that they will not go back on the ultimatum, despite the government’s efforts to address labour demands.
