North Carolina Designates June 14 as ‘Igbo Day’ to Honor Nigerian Heritage

Raleigh, NC – North Carolina Governor Josh Stein has officially declared June 14, 2025, as “Igbo Day” across the state, a significant recognition of the vibrant cultural heritage and substantial contributions of the Igbo community from southeastern Nigeria. The proclamation urges statewide observance, highlighting the deep roots and positive impact of Igbo individuals in North Carolina.

In his declaration, Governor Stein underscored the presence of thousands of Igbo people who have resided in North Carolina for over fifty years, actively preserving and promoting their rich traditions.

The proclamation noted the community’s commitment to civic engagement, philanthropy, and economic contributions, citing their involvement in various charitable causes, volunteer efforts in schools, food pantries, highway cleanups, and support for women’s shelters and hospitals.

The designation also acknowledges the establishment of the nonprofit Igbo Day Festival Organization in 2022, which aims to unite and educate North Carolinians about Igbo culture, art, music, and traditional values. The organization held its inaugural Igbo Day Festival on July 10, 2022, fostering cultural pride and inspiring future generations to embrace their identity.

This declaration positions North Carolina as a state that values and celebrates its diverse cultural landscape, recognizing the Igbo community as an integral part of its social, cultural, and economic fabric.
