SERAP Challenges President Tinubu’s Electricity Tariff Hike in Landmark Lawsuit” Keyword: Electricity Tariff Hike

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) is suing President Bola Tinubu’s administration for an arbitrary increase in electricity tariffs. The Nigerian government approved a N225 ($0.15) per kilowatt-hour tariff increment for Band A electricity consumers, who enjoy 20 hours of electricity daily.

The increase will see customers paying N225 instead of the current N66 kilowatt per hour. Band A customers represent 15% of the 12 million electricity customers in Nigeria. The NERC has also downgraded some customers from Band A to Band B due to non-fulfilment of required hours of electricity provided by electricity distribution companies.

SERAP condemned the tariff increase, stating it came despite the country’s difficult economic realities and a pending lawsuit. The group has asked Tinubu’s administration to reverse the hike pending the hearing and determination of the suit it filed, to protect the integrity of the judicial process and the rule of law.
