MSF Reports Civilians Enduring Extreme Violence in Sudan Conflict
Civilians in Sudan have endured severe violence during a year-long conflict between the army and a rival paramilitary group, according to a report by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). The organization highlighted the physical and mental toll of this violence, worsened by a collapsed healthcare system and inadequate international humanitarian response.
MSF’s teams have treated thousands injured from bombings and shelling, with access to care severely hampered due to looting, insecurity, and damage to medical facilities. The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) were criticized for their disregard for human life and international law, amid ongoing hostilities since April 2023.
Mediation efforts have failed, and death toll estimates reach into the tens of thousands. Reports from refugee camps detail widespread abuses, such as forced evictions and sexual violence, which remain underreported due to stigma and fear. MSF has called for an end to attacks on civilians and protection for healthcare infrastructure and vulnerable populations.
