Security Forces Seal Off Ugandan Opposition Headquarters in Anticipation of Protest

Ugandan police and military surrounded the headquarters of the National Unity Platform (NUP), the country’s largest opposition party, in anticipation of planned anti-government protests scheduled for July 23.

NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi, known as Bobi Wine, reported that security forces had barred entry and exit from the premises and that several party leaders had been violently arrested. The protests, led by Ugandan youth, aim to denounce alleged corruption and human rights abuses under President Yoweri Museveni’s long rule.

While Wine stated that his party was not organizing the protests, it expressed support for them. Police cited precautionary measures due to perceived mobilization by the NUP. Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, has denied accusations of corruption and warned against the protests, suggesting they are influenced by foreign entities.
