Ethiopian Landslides Lead to Surge in Death Toll, Reaching 229, According to Officials

Two landslides in southern Ethiopia have risen to 229 deaths, with the death toll potentially rising further as the search for survivors and casualties continues.

The first landslide occurred on Sunday night, burying people in Gofa zone, and the second one engulfed others who had gathered to help on Monday morning. At least 50 people have died, including children and police officers.

The death toll surged after rescuers were trapped, and Gofa district administrator Misikir Mitiku expressed sadness over the incident. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed expressed his deep sadness and the deployment of federal officials to reduce the disaster’s impact.

African Union chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat expressed solidarity with the people and government of Ethiopia, while the head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, expressed concern for the affected families and sent a WHO team to support immediate health needs.

Workneh Gebeyehu, executive secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, urged everyone to stay vigilant and follow safety protocols to protect lives and prevent further tragedies.
