Nigeria’s DSS Takes Action Against Take-It-Back Movement, Directs UBA to Freeze Accounts Over Proposed Protest
The United Bank for Africa (UBA) has frozen the account of human rights organization Take It Back Movement (TIB Movement) in Nigeria, following its call for the #EndBadGovernance in Nigeria protests.
TIB Movement claims that UBA has frozen its account on the instructions of Nigeria’s secret police, the Department of State Services (DSS). The organization has vowed to take legal action against UBA if the account is not unfrozen within 24 hours.
Reactions from #RevolutionNow converner Omoyele Sowore have also described the DSS as lawless, stating that the people of Nigeria will let them down soon.
The organisers of the planned nationwide #DaysOfRage and #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest have written to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, requesting the release of Eagle Square between August 1 and 10, 2024, for the peaceful demonstration.
In a letter signed by Damilare Adenola, Director of Mobilisation for TIB Movement in Abuja, the protesters demanded unrestricted access to the venue 24/7 throughout the protest, and possibly even after it concludes. They also demanded the provision of 24-hour power supply, toilet facilities, water, and security for the convenience of Nigerian citizens camping at Eagle Square.
