Sowore Pays Tribute to Late Professor Pius Adesanmi, Seven Years After Tragic Crash
On the 10th of March 2019, Nigeria lost an icon and a renowned scholar, Professor Pius Adesanmi.
Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has paid an emotional tribute to the late Nigerian scholar and public intellectual, Professor Pius Adesanmi, on the seventh anniversary of his passing.
Adesanmi, a celebrated writer, satirist, and professor of African Studies at Carleton University in Canada, was among the 157 victims of the Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crash on March 10, 2019. The Boeing 737 MAX aircraft went down shortly after takeoff from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, en route to Nairobi, Kenya, in one of the aviation tragedies that later led to the global grounding of the aircraft model.
In a statement shared on Tuesday, Sowore described Adesanmi—fondly known as “Payo”—as a “comrade, brother, and literary giant,” noting that his death remains a profound loss to Nigeria’s intellectual and activist communities.
