Post-election Protests in Mauritania Result in the Deaths of at Least Three Individuals
Mauritania has witnessed three deaths in clashes between security forces and protesters following President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani’s re-election. The former army chief’s victory secures him a second term.
Despite the results, runner-up Biram Dah Abeid accused the election of “massive fraud” and urged calm protests. Security forces clashed with demonstrators in Kaedi, the nation’s largest city, and other areas. Mobile internet services were suspended post-violence, with authorities pledging to apprehend instigators.
Opposition allegations of voting irregularities were dismissed by the electoral commission, while three international observer missions confirmed a “peaceful and transparent” voting process. Ghazouani faces accusations of corruption and mismanagement, yet remains popular with the Mauritanian public.
