Tanzania’s President Removes Foreign and Information Ministers from Office

Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan has dismissed two senior officials, including Foreign Minister January Makamba and Information Minister Nape Nnauye, in a cabinet reshuffle aimed at rebuilding trust with foreign nations amid concerns over her reform agenda.

The reshuffle follows criticisms of her government’s commitment to easing restrictions on opposition and media. No reasons were provided for their removal, but the dismissal of Nnauye came after he made controversial comments about election results, which were perceived as undermining democratic efforts.

In their places, Mahmoud Thabit Kombo and Jerry Silaa have been appointed as the new foreign and information ministers, respectively. While Hassan has received recognition for reversing her predecessor’s oppressive policies, her government still faces scrutiny regarding its human rights record.
