WHO Declares Monkey-pox A Global Health Emergency

The World Health Organisation, WHO on Wednesday declared Monkey pox, now called MPOX, an increase in Africa a global public health emergency, raising a red alert over the worsening situation.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a press conference a few days ago, “Today, the emergency committee met and advised me that in its view, the situation constitutes a public health emergency of international concern. I have accepted that advice,”.

The Monkeypox as it is formerly called but now MPOX, is a viral disease related to the now-eradicated smallpox virus. It can spread through close contact such as touching, kissing or sex, as well as through contaminated materials like sheets, clothing and needles, according to WHO.
