CAF Ruling: Morocco Crowned Champions as Senegal Forfeits Title

In a move that has sent shockwaves through the sporting world, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially stripped Senegal of their 2025 AFCON title. The governing body’s Appeal Board overturned the original 1-0 result, awarding host nation Morocco an administrative 3-0 victory following the chaotic events of the final held on January 18, 2026.

The Stoppage-Time Chaos in Rabat

The match at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium remained a scoreless deadlock until deep into stoppage time. The tension reached a breaking point when referee Jean-Jacques Ndala, following a VAR review, awarded Morocco a penalty for a challenge on Brahim Diaz.

Incensed by the decision, and still frustrated by a previously disallowed goal; Senegal’s head coach Pape Thiaw ordered his squad off the pitch. This 17-minute protest proved to be the “Lions of Teranga’s” undoing. Although the team eventually returned, and Brahim Diaz subsequently missed the spot-kick, the damage to the match’s regulatory integrity had already been done.

Why the Result Was Overturned

The Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) filed an appeal not to challenge Senegal’s athletic performance, but to demand the strict application of tournament bylaws. CAF’s decision rests on two critical pillars:

• Article 82: States that any team refusing to play or leaving the field without the referee’s permission is considered the loser.

• Article 84: Mandates that a team violating Article 82 is eliminated and the match is recorded as a 3-0 loss.

CAF’s statement confirmed that Senegal’s conduct fell directly under these provisions, rendering their eventual extra time winning goal by Pape Gueye void in the eyes of the law.

A New Chapter for the Atlas Lions

While the victory comes via a boardroom decision rather than a last minute goal, it marks a historic milestone for Morocco, who now secure their first AFCON title since 1976. The FRMF emphasized their commitment to “clarity and stability” within African competitions, while FIFA President Gianni Infantino and other officials have condemned the “unacceptable scenes” that marred the final.

This ruling serves as a stern reminder to all federations: in the heat of competition, the regulations of the game remain absolute.
