ANC Announces South Africa’s Unity Government Now Includes Five Parties
South Africa’s new government comprises five parties, holding a majority in the National Assembly. In a departure from its long-standing single-party rule, the African National Congress (ANC) was compelled to build coalitions due to its failure to secure a parliamentary majority since 1994.
Cyril Ramaphosa retained the presidency, garnering support from the Democratic Alliance, Inkatha Freedom Party, and Patriotic Alliance. The smaller GOOD party also joined the coalition government.
The ANC emphasized that this unity government aims to represent all participating parties and reach decisions through consensus. Key objectives include fostering rapid, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, boosting capital investment, promoting job creation, implementing land reforms, and advancing infrastructure development.
In consultation with GNU party leaders, the president will appoint the cabinet, following established government decision-making and budgeting procedures.
