Kenyan Protesters Commit to Take Over Nation’s Main Airport Amid Ongoing Deadly Unrest Entering Sixth Week

Kenyan protesters have declared a “total shutdown” as they seize control of Nairobi’s main international airport, marking the sixth week of deadly anti-government demonstrations. At least 50 people have been killed and over 400 injured, according to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights.

Social media posters encourage protesters to close all roads leading to the airport and cause a shutdown. Authorities have increased security at the airport and warned against trespassing on protected areas, as it is punishable by law.

The protests began last month after President William Ruto pulled a controversial finance bill that would have raised taxes on basic commodities. After Ruto renominated six ministers after firing the entire cabinet due to public pressure, public anger has reignited.

The cabinet nominees still need parliamentary approval, but they are likely to be confirmed since Ruto’s party holds the required majority.

President Ruto expressed frustration with the protests and declared that “enough is enough” after failed attempts at dialogue. The protesters, mostly Gen-Z citizens, have largely organized on social media platforms, drawing anger from Ruto.
