South African President Participates in Crucial Party Meeting for Government Formation

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa convened with senior African National Congress officials to plan the formation of a new government following the party’s 30-year rule loss.

The ANC’s National Executive Committee is anticipated to deliberate on the course, with indications pointing to a preference for a national unity government encompassing diverse political parties in a broad accord rather than forming a direct coalition with the primary opposition, the Democratic Alliance (DA).

Once headed by Nelson Mandela, the ANC has experienced dwindling support in the past two decades due to significant poverty, unemployment, and inequality levels. The recently elected Parliament is set to convene by June 16, with electing a president standing as one of its foremost tasks. Furthermore, the sought-after agreement will determine the possibility of Ramaphosa’s reelection.
